- 520 0_ |a The whole work consists of fifty lives, of which forty-six are paralleled, and are therefore justly entitled to the name of parallel lives. In the Greek and Roman celebrities are so dovetailed together as to form twenty-three pairs, and after each pair follows a comparative discourse. The other four are detached lives, without comparison, and without any discourse. The English translation, which is here reprinted, was made by the greatest poet of the seventeenth century in England, Dryden.
