- 520 __ |a This book is a biography of Professor Sir John Charnley, one of Manchester's most famous sons, and brilliant orthopaedic surgeon. Charnley made an outstanding contribution to the development of total hip replacement which has been widely acclaimed. The book is to some extent the story of this operation, but it is described in relation to his life and does not attempt a scientific evaluation of his work. He created the Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital which, although dedicated to research was primarily a surgical clinic geared to handling large numbers of patients. This made it possible for him to establish the results of his operation on a scale which had never been achieved before.
