- 摘要附注:
- "Sculptor Charles Cordier (1827-1905) captured attention when he exhibited a bust of a Sudanese man, Said Abdallah, at the Paris Salon in 1848, the very year slavery was abolished in France and its colonies. The second half of the nineteenth century in France witnessed the birth of a new science, anthropology, but Cordier was one of the few artists of his day to apply his artistic curiosity to this new scientific discipline. Cordier's creations matched the taste of his time for luxurious and colorful marble, thus making him a pioneer of polychrome sculpture in the nineteenth century. He focused mainly on the use of onyx-marble, a seductive material he discovered in Algeria." "The Musee d'Orsay in Paris has organized an unprecedented exhibition of Cordier's work, highlighting seventy-five sculptures and approximately forty ethnographic photographs. Filled with several texts on his life and work compiled by the organizers of the exhibition, this book serves as the official exhibition catalogue but also includes a catalogue raisonne that classifies and presents six hundred of Cordier's works, of which four hundred are reproduced."--BOOK JACKET.
