This book selects six representative works by the Japanese author Higuchi Ichiyō following her literary transition. It examines her growth as a writer by integrating family history, diaries, letters, essays, and memoirs, and explores the development and transformation of her ideological consciousness. Through Ichiyō’s representative works from her transitional period, the book clarifies the social-critical consciousness she maintained after her literary shift. Focusing on the unique stylistic expression of the "elegant and vulgar blended style" in Higuchi Ichiyō’s literature, it compares the 1962 translation by People’s Literature Publishing House with the 2004 version by Yilin Press, discussing common issues and solutions in the modern Chinese translation of Ichiyō’s works. From a reader-response perspective, it highlights the necessity of translating Ichiyō’s literature into Chinese. Employing a literary sociological research method, the book grounds its arguments in the inner conflicts and perplexities of the Meiji-era people as reflected within and beyond Ichiyō’s literary texts. It engages in a cultural deconstruction of the representations of Japan’s modernization since the modern era, thereby delving into the core ideas of Ichiyō’s literature.
